Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. After her father died as a carnival barker, at the age of a little girl and she was forced to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a magazine about crime However, the stage was not a match for her. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. She was in Boston where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time, was an usherette. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
